Gazetted as a national park in the 1990s, these mist covered hills intertwined with large plains blanketed are the best destination to go gorilla trekking in Africa. Join us on a journey and explore one of Uganda’s oldest tropical forest that has survived through the last ice age for about 25000 years.

About the Forest

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National park covers an area of about 327 sq km. Characterized by tangled vegetation draped over a deeply fissured landscape of steep slippery hills, the forest is home to incredible wildlife though it is most renowned for hosting the endangered mountain gorillas. The park’s highest altitude is at 2,607m above sea level (southern part) and the lowest at1,160m above sea level in the northern part.

This thick impenetrable forest was first gazetted as two crown forest reserves one being Kayonza and another being Kasatora in 1932. The two forest reserves were later combined in 1942 to form the Impenetrable Central crown forest. In 1964, the reserve was designated as an animal sanctuary to boost the protection of mountain gorillas and was renamed Impenetrable Central Forest reserve. In 1966, two other forest reserves became part of the main reserve, increasing its area to almost 321 square kilometers (124 sq mi) and was managed as both a game sanctuary and a forest reserve.

In 1991, the Central forest reserve was turned into a national park and named Bwindi Impenetrable National park. Gorilla tracking became a tourist activity in April 1993 with one habituated gorilla family of Mubare but since then other 8 groups have been habituated for tracking including Rushegura, Kyaguriro, Oruzogo, Habinyanja, Nshongi, Bitukura, Nkuringo as well as Kahungye groups.

The park was declared a world heritage site by UNESCO in 1994 because of its rich biodiversity which includes a variety of threatened and endangered species on the IUCN’s red list.

Things to See in Bwindi Forest

The park’s rich biodiversity includes about 120 mammal species of which 10 are primate species, and 45 are small mammals and is believed to be one of East Africa’s richest faunal communities. The park also has a long list of birds, about 350 species including the Albertine rift endemics, 310 species of butterflies, 51 reptiles, 88 moths and 27 species of frogs, chameleons, geckos and many endangered species.

The park is believed to have one of East Africa’s richest flora that includes over 1000 flowering plant species including 200 species of trees and 104 species of ferns. The northern (low altitude) sector is rich in species of the Guineo-Congolian flora. These include two species internationally recognized as endangered, the Brown mahogany and Brazzeia longipedicellata. This rich flora has been a result of the forest’s location being at the meeting point of the plain and mountain forests producing the Afromontane vegetation that is rare in Africa. The area harbors a high population of endemic species of the Albertine Rift.

Bwindi is the remaining home to some of the globally threatened species that include, high-profile mammals such as mountain gorilla, chimpanzee, l’Hoest’s monkey, the giant forest hogand African elephant; birds such as African green broadbill, Grauer’s swamp warbler, Turner’s Eremomela, Chapin’s flycatcher and Shelley’s crimson-wing; butterflies such as African giant swallowtail and Cream-banded swallowtail; carnivores like the side-striped jackal, African golden cat and African civet.

Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Forest

The park’s most popular specie is the Endangered Mountain Gorilla believed to be man’s evolutionary cousin and the largest ape in the world. Bwindi shelters almost half of these gentle apes whose population in the world is estimated at about 750 individuals and their existence and survival is endemic to Bwindi and Mgahinga in Uganda, Virunga area in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Volcanoes in Rwanda. It is believed that Bwindi Forest shelters a population of about 340 gorillas according to the Gorilla census in 2006. The reduction in number of this critically endangered species is attributed to habitat loss and poaching by human beings.

Also present in this thick forest are 10 species of primates 7 of which are diurnal. They include common chimpanzee, L’Hoest’s monkey, Black and White Colobus, red-tailed monkeys, Vervet, blue monkey and olive baboon.

The Real Truth Behind Cancer That You Need to Know

0
The Truth About Cancer

The real cause of cancer has been found long ago, by the Nobel Prize winner, Dr. Otto Warburg. Namely, he has discovered that the major reason for the incidence of all cancer types is, in fact, oxygen insufficiency.

This means that if the body lacks oxygen, the organism will become acidic and this will speed up the development of cancer.

Moreover, Dr. Warburg also claimed that cancer cells are anaerobic, meaning that they cannot survive in an alkaline environment (high in oxygen). Namely, without any exceptions,

“All normal cells have an absolute requirement for oxygen, but cancer cells can live without oxygen. Deprive a cell 35% of its oxygen for 48 hours and it may become cancerous.”

What we can do to maintain the balance of our pH levels is to consume a healthy and balanced diet. pH balance is the balance of acid and alkaline cells and fluids in the organism. Our body needs to maintain the pH levels in the blood at an alkaline level of 7.365 in order to survive.

However, modern living has made all of us, especially Americans, eat dangerous, toxic, unhealthy, and acid-forming products, including processed sugars, refined grains, GMOs, and the like. These unhealthy eating habits cause detrimental acidic pH levels.

In the case of an imbalance of the pH levels, there will be an interruption of the cellular functions and activities in the body.

Moreover, it the levels of the pH slope to the acidic side, they will lead t numerous health issues, ailments, and diseases, from heartburn and osteoporosis to diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer. Furthermore, if this state of the body lasts for a longer period of time, it will accelerate the aging process as well.

In his book The pH Miracle, Robert O. Young also claims that the main culprit for the incidence of numerous diseases is, in fact, the acidic state of the body.

Namely, all kinds of dangerous organisms that destroy our health, such as bad bacteria, viruses, parasites, or Candida survive and multiply in an acidic state, but cannot thrive in an alkaline environment.

Therefore, in order to prevent health issues and preserve your health, you need to take some measures and maintain the alkaline state of your body and the balance of pH levels.

Today, we will offer you a fantastic natural remedy for acidity that will help you eliminate all health threats:

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons of organic apple cider vinegar or lemon juice
  • 1/3 teaspoon baking soda

Method of preparation:

You need to mix the ingredients until the mixture begins to fizz. Keep adding baking soda until the fizzing stops. Next, pour the mixture into a glass of water. (8oz.)

Use:

Drink the prepared remedy all at once. You will immediately feel its beneficial effect, especially in the case of a stomach acid or acidosis.

This incredibly effective natural remedy will create an alkaline state of your body by neutralization of the pH levels, and will thus help you prevent all kinds of diseases, including cancer.

For Women: Make Him Jealous in these 4 Ways

0
Make Him Jealous

Is Jealousy really bad in a relationship? i think it’s not bad and once in a while make your boyfriend jealous. If he is not afraid of losing you he might never just value you. A jealous boyfriend will always value you more. Michelle Keldgord of Her Interest lists down some of the 4 ways you can make your boyfriend jealous.

1. Look Amazing

You know when you see your ex walking down the street, and they look 10 times hotter than when the two of you were dating? Suddenly you feel like maybe it wasn’t the best idea to break up with him over that stupid text message. You hated that feeling, right? So why not give it a shot!

If you want to make someone jealous, it is really as simple as that: look so good they regret the day the broke up with you, ignored your call, or just simply didn’t give you the time of day. Then when they realize your mistake you’ll be getting too much attention from everyone around you to even notice them.

2. Act Like You Don’t Care

Human nature is so weird sometimes. I mean, why do we suddenly want something or someone more when we can’t have it or they don’t want us back? It’s so ridiculous, but that’s just the way it is.

Let’s say you’ve been trying to get his attention for some time. Every text you send or flirty comment you make is ignored and brushed off like it doesn’t matter. Have you tried doing the opposite? Don’t send him text messages, in fact, act like he doesn’t really exist. Try not to look at him, and when he comes up to talk to you act like it doesn’t really matter. A simple smile and a few short words before you have somewhere else to be. A little taste of his own medicine might realize what he lost.

3. Pretend to be Busy

So he finally decided he wants to hang out. After days of trying to set something up, he is finally free enough for you. Well you know what? Don’t jump on it- in fact, do the exact opposite: pretend YOU are the busy one. To make him even more jealous, keep your plans mysterious. Are you busy seeing someone else? He will never know!

4. Don’t Respond to Him Immediately

If you’re trying to make someone jealous, you can’t be needy. That’s a fact. So when he tries texting you or calling you, you definitely don’t want to respond right away. You should wait anywhere between 30 minutes and 4 hours, but any longer than that is just plain rude (and yes, that IS something we are trying to avoid). Unless you are actually busy doing something, we recommend a 30 minute wait to keep him on his toes. When you do finally respond, try to keep the conversation brief- tip number 5.

Kampala’s Jazz Scene

0

Although the genre goes all back to the early 1900’s, it was only in 2008 that jazz music really stamped its mark on Kampala’s social scene. Initially, it was used as a corporate branding tool packaged with international artistes like Gerald Albright, Howard Hewett, Chuck Loeb, Pragmo Cooper and Oscar Seaton, and South Africa’s Miriam Makebe and Jonathan Butler.

They entertained fans during corporate events like mobile telecom company, Warid’s, Kampala International Jazz Festival in 2008 and MTN’s Jazz Safari a year later as well as the annual Nile Gold Jazz Safari. At the time, Jazz was marketed for and largely associated to social class as opposed to music preference; attracting the cream of Kampala’s elite.

Harry Mwanje the Tusker Brand Manager agrees. “We have held jazz events for more than a year now and usually market it for a certain crowd consumer. We are looking for the premium person who appreciates the finer things in life.”

However it began, local jazz bands have increased and jazz audiences in Kampala are now cutting across every social class and market. Like the hip-hop, rock and oldies theme nights in local bars, jazz nights are making rounds in Kampala. Jazz music has quickly proved a successful alternative to the hip-hop that previously dominated night life of Kampala. How long the popularity will continue, or if it will be fused with other genres remains to be seen.

Jazz has over the years spawned a number of sub genres like Latin Jazz, Cape Jazz, Soul Jazz, and Jazz Rap and that list goes on. So it’s no surprise that in Kampala it’s a very thin line between ‘jazz music’ and ‘live music.’ So thin in fact, that Anitah Ahurira, an ardent fan of jazz, thinks it hardly exists at all. “Any group with a lead singer and an instrumentalist is considered by many a jazz band in Uganda.”

So who are ‘the’ names in jazz in Kampala and where can they be found? A rich palette of sounds is created by bands like Quella which plays every Friday at Emin Pasha Hotel in Nakasero. Or Code 9, which play on Friday as well at Jazzville on Bandali rise in Bugolobi (for an entrance fee of 10,000 UGX). Other jazz band performances on Fridays include Aroma band at Gattomatto (former Katch the Sun) and Magic Hornz at the Sheraton Paradise bar in Nakasero.

Baxmba Waves plays every Wednesday at 8pm at Bubbles O’Leary Irish pub and Cayenne hosts the Fusion Band that same night. Mish Mash, The Woods, and Legends Bar (in Kyadondo Rugby Grounds) have jazz gigs on Thursday. And, if you are craving the exclusive feel there is Pragmo Acid Jazz Night every last Thursday of the month at the Kampala Serena Hotel. Bands that play at the National Theatre, Club Obligato, Sabrina’s Pub or Grand Imperial hotel are generally tend to be more live performances cutting across many genres.

Given the ever increasing popularity of jazz in the city it’s unsurprising that an all-jazz bar Jazzville opened on Bandali Rise in Bugolobi. Live performances on Mondays, Wednesdays, Friday’s, and Sundays include among many Isiah Katumwa and Maurice Kirya as well as bands like Quella and Code 9.

Whether jazz in Kampala is just a passing fad, or here to stay, one thing is clear the sound has become a favourite for a growing number of local and international clientele and it’s worth investing some time in checking it out.
