Kadiatou’s Malegato

0

Malegato, is a Guinean snack, a form of “mandazi” made mainly from rice flour. Kadiatou is a small Guinean girl who helped making this, hence naming it after her. Malegato in Sousou/Susu language means rice cake. This is being prepared the traditional Guinean way.

Ingredients

400 grams

rice flour

100 grams

wheat flour

100 grams

sugar ( – or enough to your taste)

1 package

dry yeast (for a 500g cake mixture)

water (lukewarm)

oil (enough for deep frying)

Instructions

  • to the rice flour in a dish, add about 100g of wheat flour, yeast & sugar
  • add some lukewarm water, little by little while thoroughly mixing until a light, not too thick dough consistency is attained.
  • cover & let the dough rise for 15 – 30 minutes. It takes longer if cold water is used.
  • heat some oil in a deep pan or chip pan to about 190° C
  • scoop several large spoonfuls and pour them into the hot oil. Turn a few times.
  • after about 5 minutes they should be ready. Place them on some paper towels to soak out excess oil
  • add the next round

Notes

The amount of water added was not stated, because it was not measured but if little by little is added as shown in video, you cannot go wrong. For variation some mashed ripe bananas and even ingredients like onions & pepper, etc can be added.Video will be uploaded shortly.

Smoked Fish on Bread

0

This is recipe using smoked or fried fish fillet is good for a quick snack as well as for a complete meal and quite nutritious.

Ingredients
125 grams
smoked fish filet (smoked trout used, tilapia, nile perch, etc could do)
1 paprika
1 tomato

black pepper to taste (or other type)

herbal salt

brown bread

white garlic sauce (optional)

radishes
1 cucumber (small)

Instructions

Slice the vegetables as well as the bread
Place the fish onto the bread
In case you have no smoked fish, also nicely seasoned, fried tilapia, nile perch, etc fillet can do
Season with pepper, herbal salt, etc

Notes

In some countries, bread and there are lots of types of it, is used as more than a snack and together with some ingredients added to it is a complete meal. 2, 3 big slices like above are quite satisfying. I added a type of white garlic sauce. You may use it if you want or a “proper” salad dressing.

13. Ssese Islands
If you’re looking for a place to slow it right down, Ssese’s lush archipelago of 84 islands along Lake Victoria’s northwestern shore boasts some stunning white-sand beaches. The city feels like Africa with an Asian flare and is the center of everything to do in the country.  There are a variety of restaurants to try, new things to experience like a ride on a boda boda (motorcycle taxi), or even just get to know what life is like in the capital city in Uganda.  Don’t forget to check out the churches, Bahai Temple, and museums in the city.

15. Visit the largest manyata in Eastern Africa

The region in Uganda with most manyatas is called Karamojo and not long ago, it was known as a very dangerous part of the country. When visited it, you might had not returned alive. Most of the travelers around Uganda still avoid it.

The Karamoja region is a bit hard to reach if you don’t have your own transport, but if you can spare few extra days, you should not have any second thoughts. Instead of violent people, the Karamojongs are now curious, friendly and hospitable. Not many people visit them, so prepare yourself to get a very, VERY big attention – maybe for some, an unpleasant one, but this will definitely be one of the most unforgettable experiences, you will do on your Uganda travel.

I almost could say, Uganda offers every landscape, you can see in Africa. Uganda has it all – jungle, savannas, lakes, rivers, mountains…The only thing it is missing is the desert and the sand dunes.

17. Try the typical food

Due to lots of water in Uganda, the food is very diverse and not really as boring as you might think. Yes, the famous green bananas (matoke) are still the number one choice, but you can get all sorts of vegetables and fruit here. Due to the river Nile and Victoria Lake, even the fish lovers will not be able to complain. Try the local eateries, but be prepared to wait at least two hours for a meal, if it is made out of something else than chapati and matoke.

18. Visit local markets
First think which you will notice, are colors… Not only because of the colorful veggies and fruit, even the people and their dresses are something you put a shine on. Open your eyes and ears and enjoy the lively markets in all their beauties.

19. Swim in Lake Kyaninga
Swim in the cool, clear waters of Lake Kyaninga, one of western Uganda’s prettiest crater lakes, whilst staying at the Kyaninga Lodge.

20. Hike to the 100 meter high Sipi waterfall

If you like water and intensive green color, you should never miss out on this beautiful and powerful waterfall. Get yourself a local guide, who will cost you almost nothing and find out all about the local life in the nearby village. While hiking down the waterfall, you will be challenged by the steep leather, shaking knees and sweat, but as soon as you take your eyes on the waterfall you will know, why you are here.

5 Reasons Why You Should Visit Uganda, the Pearl of Africa

0

Uganda is one of the best safari destinations in Africa. This green country is a must visit for travelers interested in gorilla trekking in East and Central Africa. Here are 5 reasons why Uganda should be among your “must visit” destinations this year.

1. White water Rafting on the Nile in Uganda

In 2012 we saw celebrations of tourism in Uganda. Indeed that year can best be described as the year of success for Uganda tourism industry as different accolades kept coming its way. Just before the end of the year, we crowned the year up with one of the accolades which positioned Uganda as one of the top countries to visit this 2013 as decorated by Lonely Planet’s travel online magazine.

Uganda, being one of Lonely Planet’s top must see country for 2013, is truly a highlight of the African landscape. With its dense misty impenetrable forests, snow capped Rwenzoris, glassy lakes as well as crater and expansive savannah grassland, no wonder Winston Churchill dubbed Uganda as the ‘pearl of Africa’. While Uganda’s endangered mountain gorillas whose numbers also rose to over 480 in Bwindi impenetrable national park are the appeals for various guests that come on a Uganda gorilla trekking and wildlife adventure safari, a short Uganda safari to the mighty Murchison falls or any of the many Uganda safaris. There are uncountable attractions for tourists which not only include wildlife but unique cultural attractions plus the lovely loving Uganda people.

Having survived the shadows of a deep dark past under former president Idi Amin and the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), Uganda is no longer a country to be feared and is regarded as one of Africa’s safest destinations. Whether one wants wildlife safaris, trekking volcanoes, white-water rafting or just kicking back on the beach, a Uganda safari any of the several Uganda safaris has the best Africa has to offer. Here are four unmissable Uganda safari experiences and where you can find them:

2. Gorilla tracking experience;

This is the highlight of Uganda safari experiences if not Africa as tracking mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Mgahinga national Park set you up for the first sight at the shy black mount gorillas amidst the thick foliage. The adrenaline kicks in when you’re adjacent to the imposing figure of a huge Silverback and it’s all very imposing nature alongside its curious babies peeking through leaves as they twist, turn and somersault for your amusement. Like many tourists that have visited these gentle giants have said, ‘ this is a not just life time Uganda safari rather the ultimate world safari’

A Gorilla trek permit for US$600 but don’t think twice about turning down this genuine once-in a lifetime opportunity. Please do remember that a portion of the fee goes back to the park and gorilla conservation initiatives, helping to ensure their survival as they are endangered species.

3. Great Wildlife, minus the crowds

While Uganda’s national parks lack the recognition like the big name neighbors like Serengeti and Kruger Park, Uganda’s national parks boasts of all the animals, minus the crowds. Murchison Falls national is Uganda’s largest park where you can follow up your morning wildlife drive with a boat cruise on the Nile to the base of the falls the making this the perfect way to spy on elephants, buffalo, crocodiles and loads of hippos as they go about their days activities in the park  while you relax with a cool beer on the boat.

Head to Queen Elizabeth for a better chance to spot the elusive leopards or even its trademark tree-climbing lions. Just countable tourists make it to the far north to Kidepo Valley’s national park, but those who do so are truly rewarded with not only the best selection of wildlife, and some of the most spectacular scenery of Uganda. And if you are interested in visiting the Big Five, add Ziwa Sanctuary to your itinerary to get up close to the white rhino, which you track on foot.

4. Adventure by the romantic waters of Uganda

Truly Uganda is a must visit place this 2013 and its not only about the wild life experience you’re yet to experience but make it a point to visit the source of the Nile once on your Uganda safari because it is the magnet for white-water rafting adventure lovers where you can plunge down Grade-5 rapids or otherwise kayak or try the white-knuckle jet boat ride as witnessed by all travelers who have visited this spot on their Uganda safaris.

Those who prefer a different kind of water excitement can go for bungee jumping by Bujagali Falls. Trekkers can test their endurance tackling the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Rwenzori Mountains, which is famously described as the ‘mountains of the Moon’ with stunning views of the equatorial mist as your reward at the top. For more treks to make your safari to Uganda more exciting, try Mount Elgon National Park or the dramatic Virunga volcanoes found at the borders of Uganda, Congo and Rwanda where they converge like some tourists on several Uganda safaris have done.

5. Unique eye scenery to die for

Once your Uganda safari addiction wanes and your body needs some r&r from those bone-jarring bus journeys, Uganda has some beautiful spots for resting up. Magical Lake Bunyonyi has magnificent views where the mist hangs low over terraced hillsides and dugout canoes glide through the still waters allowing you to relax in a calm environment.

Ssese Islands which is found in the oceanic sized Lake Victoria is where you’ll find some of the finest white sand beaches and burning sunsets the kind of place you’ll want to seek out a hammock and bring a good book. Then there is stunning Siipi Falls in eastern Uganda, which is earning a reputation from its uninhibited views of the crashing falls.

To crown up your Safari to Uganda/Uganda safari make it a point to go for the coffee tours, where you’ll be shown the end-to-end process at a local coffee plantation, culminating with a delicious steaming cuppa while watching the sun set over banana plantations.

I am the Young Mandela – Eddy Kenzo

0
Eddy Kenzo

It’s a trend for celebrities to take up names to boost their fame and so has Eddy Kenzo done. The singer’s claims of being the young version of Nelson Mandela has left a lot of words being thrown at him. Mandela is the grand father of Africa, the first president of South Africa who fought hard to see that his beloved country was rescued from the Apartheid Rule.

Some of his fans claim he doesn’t deserve to call himself that and rather it’s then to initiate the name for him. A few others claim re-branding himself could hurt his original personal brand that he has already built.

“No doubt you are a hard working young man & an inspiration to your people & fans. However, i think you should slow down a little, take your family on a vacation & enjoy the fruits of your success,” said one of his fans.

Eddy Kenzo feels with all his milestones and achievements, he deserves a greater name but the bar his trying to match was set too high for him. He is yet to build a legacy of his own.

Faridah Nakazibwe

Days ago the media went awash with rumor claiming NTV was yet losing another presenter to new entrants BBS.

It was claimed Faridah Nakazibwe was bound for a juicy deal with BBS that would see her earn approximately 10 million shillings monthly.

According to a source, the rumor linking Faridah Nakazibwe to BBS is false. Faridah is still an employee at NTV and is not leaving anytime soon despite the fact that many presenters have flee the station.

For the past few years, NTV Uganda has lost almost all it’s best presenters to rival stations with majority crossing over to NBS Television. Faridah Nakazibwe is among the long serving staff at the station currently but might be snatched anytime soon.

Imagine a Uganda with Zuena as President?

Of course Bebe Cool would be the first husband, the vice president of the country and at the same time take up more ministerial posts. With Zuena as President of Uganda, we really don’t know what her kind of leadership would look like.

Zuena shocked everyone during the Life of Bebe Cool press conference when she revealed her plans to slot up in the presidential race for 2021. Such a brave move it is but question is; can she stand a chance in the race? will she be able to even make it through the nominations? maybe she’s confident she will.

Meanwhile, Bebe Cool is a very supportive husband and always believes in his wife. He was left with nothing but to encourage her and give her hope. Bebe Cool reveals his biggest investment is his family, Zuena’s aspiration could be one of the ideas worth investing in. Would you elect Zuena as President of Uganda? Please share your views below.

Eddy Kenzo ups Fashion Game

0

Stardom comes with a lot of trends and adaptations. Eddy Kenzo is a true testimony of a non-fashionista who has upped his fashion game and accepted the fact that he always has to look good and daring before his millions of fans.

After drawing a comparison between the singer’s fashion before the BET Awards milestone and the current one, we notice a big trend. He’s probably become more smarter or perhaps he could be affiliated to some of the best urban fashion stores who have taken charge of redefining his look

Besides representing big in the Coke Studio Africa affiliation, Kenzo has been cited to be among the smartest celebrities so far at the activation. We couldn’t get all the photos but we have one that will give more light to our analysis. See photograph below:

Album Review: Levels By AKA

0
AKA Levels

Album: Levels

Artiste: AKA

Reviewed By: Kyle Duncan Kushaba

If there’s any artiste in Africa who has gained fame and kept it by being rude to his fans, it’s AKA. He is clearly living the real Hip Hop royalty life of not giving a hoot about what any one thinks of him. He has beefed with whoever wants to beef, and is not afraid to go all out on social media and blast the world. With the release of his solid debut Altar Ego three years ago, the ensuing superstar status it afforded him, and the gaudy touting of his sophomore effort; one’s expectations were understandably high for AKA’s second album.

Kicking off with Levels- a short impressive spoken word piece by emcee/poet Tumi Molekane over droning synthesizers smoothed out by subtle keys- Levels promises to be a remarkable work of art.

Unfortunately, AKA fails to live up to the lyrical standards set by Tumi. He offers nothing engaging. The subject matter is a normalcy-it revolves around him running Jozi, grinding, and the good times. However, his song-making ability is reminiscent of the likes of Kanye West, Drake, and Kendrick Lamar. He puts a great effort in his hooks and bridges; and the marriage between beats and lyrics is impeccable, making every song on the album worth a listen and even a repeat.

He is unapologetic about the level of success he has reached. Neither is he afraid to flaunt it. On Sim Dope, he spits: “They pull me out the envelopes, you should f**k with the winners/You got some buzz from your singles, but that’s just some luck for beginners” which could possibly be a subliminal shot aimed at South African rapper Cassper Nyovest with whom he has been involved in a highly publicized feud.

Sonically, Levels is homogenous. A considerable number of the songs are hip hop adulterated by dance and/or house music samples – a winning formulaic sound he launched through such successful singles as Jealousy, Kontrol and Congratulate.

He applies the same formula on the laid back summer anthem Sunshine featuring South African house music darling Micasa’s J’Something and Ghanaian rapper Sarkodie. Nigerian dancehall artist Burna Boy and South African rappers JR and Da L.E.S appear on the Brenda Fassie- sampling twerk gospel banger All Eyes on Me. This is probably my best song on the album.

Run Jozi-where AKA and K.O shamelessly lift Migo’s “Versace” flow- take the standard form of a 21st century hip hop banger with the use of 808s and heavy basslines. I feel like they should have been more original here and not jerked someone else’s lines.

While Jo’burg emcee Reason spits a stellar autobiographical 16 on Pressure – a song about how the spotlight is not all glitz and glamour and the immense pressure that comes with fame; K.O’s Run Jozi verse and Tumi’s spoken word piece on Levels are the albums zeniths lyrically. On Daddy Issues, AKA tells the story of a young female lost soul who needs to slow down as everyday is only 24 hours.

In an age where albums are released and easily accessed everyday, brevity does an album more good than bad. But at only 39 minutes and 11 tracks, Levels may seem a bit shorter than acceptable especially since four of the tracks are already highly publicised singles dating as far back as 2012.

Though far from being a lyrical masterpiece, Levels is a great body of work that will likely have South Africa (and even Africa at large) eating out of the palm of AKA’s hand for the next two years. If you don’t respect him as a rapper maybe you will respect him as a producer.

How to boost your appetite

0

Do you have less appetite yet you feel like munching all the time? truth is appetite can decrease or can be lost because of multiple reasons and if not attended to could have a bunch of several negative repercussions on your immune system or your body at large. Proper nutrition is key to a daily healthy life.

Alissa Fleck of Healthy Eating lists down below, some of they ways you can boost their appetite.

Avoid Fluids Before Meals
Drinking fluids, such as cold water, before a meal is a tactic used by dieters for weight loss, because it makes them feel more full and less likely to consume as much food as they would have otherwise. Try not to drink any fluids within 30 minutes before a meal. However, there are some exceptions — a glass of wine or juice before a meal may actually help boost your appetite. Drink juice, smoothies or milkshakes between meals to get nutrients even when you’re not hungry.

Exercise
Exercise is a surefire way to stimulate appetite by burning the body’s supply of calories and prompting a person to eat, according to a study published in 2009 in the “American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.” A study published in the “British Journal of Nutrition” in 2008 also found incremental increases in exercise caused research subjects to compensate for increased calories burned. If your appetite is low, consider not only exercising, but also increasing your regular workout routine in increments to spur your appetite.

Snacking
Perhaps counterintuitively, according to CancerCare.org, snacking may actually increase appetite. Consider eating several small meals spread throughout the day rather than a few larger meals. Have snacks between meals as well, and keep snacks readily available as you are more likely to eat something in such case. Stick to a regular, daily pattern of snacking and eating meals, and eat foods high in protein. If your appetite is especially low, try to eat something you particularly enjoy. Try adjusting the temperature of foods to make them more palatable, but be wary of food safety and possible contamination of foods not prepared or stored at safe temperatures. Avoid high-fat foods, as these can make you feel full quickly.

Atmosphere
Atmosphere can play a role in appetite, according to the Georgetown Hospital System. Try eating in comfortable surroundings with friends and family, which may prompt you to focus less on the food and therefore allow you to eat more naturally. Others’ eating habits may also influence your own. Stay away from the area where food is being prepared and allow food to be prepared by others to your liking. Avoid environments with strong odors, such as cigarette smoke, as this can affect the taste and odor of food and reduce your appetite. Get adventurous with your food and atmosphere — trying something new may help give your appetite a needed jolt.
